StrongVPN review

StrongVPN is a VPN provider located in the United States. It offers services with the help of 650+ servers scattered across over 20 countries. In addition to all the typical features in the business, this provider also allows you to connect an unusually high number of devices per single account - up to 12. It can also be set up on certain routers to which you can then connect as many devices as you want and have them all covered by the VPN.

This VPN is one of the platforms that provide access to the best-known streaming and other kinds of services and websites that may be unreachable in some locations for various reasons. These include the popular Netflix, Popcorn Time, Spotify, Hulu, Pandora, HBO, and even Crunchyroll. Torrenting is another service you’ll have unlimited and fast access to with this provider. The company confirms this itself - you can exchange large files via P2P with total privacy, no logs, and unlimited bandwidth.

 Plans and pricing

StrongVPN keeps it simple in terms of pricing as well. There are only two options available - monthly and yearly plans. The 1-month plan is priced at $10, while the 1-year plan costs $5.83 (billed $69.99 every 12 months).

Both plans come with a 30-day money-back guarantee. The company doesn’t offer a free trial, because of the potential “heavily abusive traffic” usually experienced by some other providers that offer free trial accounts.

However, StrongVPN does state that its money-back guarantee is unconditional and risk-free. This means that when you sign up to the service, you can ask for a refund during the 30-day period if there is any part of it that you’re not satisfied with.

StrongVPN accepts three payment methods - PayPal, AliPay, and credit cards.

 Privacy and logging

The privacy-focused features include all the classics - the AES-256-CBC encryption, a kill switch, as well as OpenVPN, IKEv2, IPSec, L2TP, and SSTP protocols. StrongVPN’s kill switch is no different from other similar platforms. It terminates all internet access on your device in an event of an unexpected VPN connection interruption.

This keeps all your sensitive data contained to your device, with no chance of leaking out. In terms of connection protocols, the company recommends using IKEv2 for Windows, Mac, and iOS, OpenVPN for Android, and SSTP as a good alternative to IKEv2 and OpenVPN on Windows devices.

StrongVPN applies the usual no-logs policy. The provider assures consumers that it will not keep track or log your data when you’re using it. The only information that is collected is your account and payment information.

More details about the policy itself would be appreciated, though. Moreover, some other VPN providers have become aware that the no-logs policy claims are only empty words if they cannot be substantiated so they are starting to conduct independent quality and privacy audits. StrongVPN would benefit from a similar strategy, in addition to putting their customers’ minds at ease.

Another thing to consider privacy-wise is that StrongVPN is registered in the United States and may be subject to US legislation. Another US-based provider was part of controversy concerning sharing sensitive information with the authorities which led to a user’s identification. The US is also part of certain intelligence sharing alliances known as 5-Eyes, 9-Eyes, and 14-Eyes. The governments belonging to these alliances work together to collect and share mass surveillance information.

StrongVPN offers good performance and satisfactory speeds. As always, speed may depend on the physical location of the servers, with the US servers hailing the best results, but other locations aren’t lagging behind terribly. If you encounter any persistent speed issues, the company’s support site can be of help, as well as customer support.

 Client setup

The provider can be installed on a long list of platforms and devices, which include Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android, as well as Linux, Fire TV, Chromium, routers, Windows Phone, Microsoft Surface, and many more. The major platforms have native clients you can download from the website and app stores, while the rest of the supported devices can be VPN-enabled manually with the help of the website’s support section.

As mentioned above, StrongVPN has a large online collection of helping articles covering most topics of interest pertaining to the use of its service. The support section is divided into three parts - setup guides, troubleshooting, and FAQ. If you still can’t get your answer, then contacting the company’s staff is the next logical step.

They can be reached via live chat on the website or you can submit a request to receive an email response or simply send an email message to their address. StrongVPN goes a step further to increase their availability to customers and those who are considering becoming one. Specifically, you can call them on the phone Monday to Friday, during regular operating hours - 9 AM to 5 PM (UTC-6).

Final verdict

StrongVPN is a US VPN service that doesn’t have many interesting and/or proprietary features but still deploys all the standard industry mechanisms to provide anonymity and allow access to geo-restricted services. Its wide platform coverage in combination with support for 12 simultaneous connections, good performance, and phone customer support make it one of the better VPN services out there. We only had a bone to pick with them with regards to slightly above-average prices and lack of pricing plans.

Our score: 4/5
