Forum looks to find answers on how to get more women involved in politics

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Three politically astute women will share their insights into the disparity between men and women in politics at a Wednesday forum in Cleveland Heights. politics reporter Mary Kilpatrick will moderate the forum, titled "Women in Politics: How to get more women to run for office in Ohio." It will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Heights Library Main Branch in Cleveland Heights. It is free and open to the public.

The panelists include:

State Rep. Christina Hagan, a Republican from Uniontown, who recently lost her primary bid in the 16th Congressional District. Hagan has served in the Statehouse since she was appointed to the seat at 22 years old. Our Revolution President Nina Turner, a Democratic former state senator from Cleveland. Turner served in the state Senate from 2008 through 2014. She was one of the few elected officials to endorse U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders' bid for the presidency. Karen Beckwith, political science professor and chair at Case Western Reserve University. Beckwith has studied and written extensively on gender and politics.

Kilpatrick has been with for four years and extensively covered women in politics in her series "A Woman's Place."

Politics is overwhelmingly dominated by men in Ohio. Despite accounting for more than 51 percent of the population, only six of 33 state senators, 23 of 99 state representatives and three of 18 Ohio members of Congress are women.

Wednesday's forum will explore that disparity and ways to encourage more women to run for political office, especially in Ohio.

The event is co-sponsored by the Case Western Reserve University Siegal Lifelong Learning Program, the League of Women Voters of Greater Cleveland,, The Plain Dealer, and the Lakewood and Cuyahoga County library systems. The corporate sponsor is First Interstate Properties.
